Anmärkning: Innehåll
  • "A scarce and curious collection of anecdotes, highlighting various English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish customs and noteworthy events. Covering all manner of subjects this small pamphlet begins with the fall of Charles I, and including descriptions of Valentine’s day, the annual fair at Fairlop in Essex, Walter Raleigh’s travels to America, tales of noted figures such as David Garrick and Jonathan Swift, a description of the Lord Mayor’s inauguration as well as noteworthy legal cases relating to marriage and divorce such as John Osborne agreeing to give up rights to his wife and son for the sum of a pound thus allowing her to marry William Sergeant. Also of note is a section describing the curious fun game of foot-ball, between two ‘armies’ of young men who take to a field. Of particular appeal appears to be the fact that the players can kick each other as they hurry after the ball, with the result that players often fall on their faces or somersault to the ground. ‘Battle’ continues until the ball has been driven either to one side of the other and crossed the ‘border-line’. It is possible that the present work has been inspired by the anonymous French work of 1820 John Bull, ou Londresiana, a collection of English originalities and singularities, though that appears to have been far more scathing and sarcastic in tone than the present work. OCLC locates only one copy at the National Library of Sweden." (Deborah Coltham Rare Books, Sevenoaks, Kent. 2015-07-17).
